| Club notes |
Whitletts Victoria were formed when the juniors regrouped after the 2nd World War. Another Junior club, Ayr Newton Rovers, was also formed and both clubs were admitted to the Western League South Section at the start of the season 1945-46. Newton Rovers were disbanded in 1957 leaving Whitletts Victoria as the towns only Junior Team.
Without a committee it was withdrawn from active participation during 72-73 but retained SJF membership. It was back playing in 73-74 but continued to struggle and midway through the following season it closed down.
However it was soon back up and running due to the inspiration and resources of local business man George and John Scarlett. It had been given a new lease of life and the following years to be the most successful in its history.
Formed in 1944, with the interest in football as a spectator sport approaching a boom period after the War, the Club joined the Western League (South) from the start of 1945-6 season. However due to the popularity of Ayr United FC at this time, the club had little support or financial clout and struggled to make any initial impact on the junior scene. Some success was achieved 1956 when the Club reached the semi final of the Scottish Junior Cup for the only time in its history and won the Western League (South) Championship 1957-8.
With no committee the Club withdrew from active participation during season 72-73 but retained SJFA membership. It was back playing in 73-74, and although the situation was no better it struggled on.
The Club was resurrected by the hard work of the Scarlett family. Dam Park was secured as a venue for home matches whilst on the park the Club had its’ most successful period, winning the Ayrshire Second Division Championship on three occasions and the Kyle & Carrick District Cup twice but by the early 1990’s the dark clouds had formed over the Club again and in 1991 the Committee of the day made the decision that it was not worthwhile carrying on. Manager Bobby Lawrie was of the opinion that he could turnaround the Clubs’ fortunes. The Club struggled on with a show-string budget but after a decade of hard unrewarding work, Lawrie announced that the Club was likely to fold unless assistance was given. Richard Brookes came forward and helped bring some stability to the Club.
In recent years, against all the odds, under the stewardship of Peter Hepburn, James Clarke and Jim Geddess, working hard with all the backroom staff and committee travelling from Greenock, the two Jims and Peter kept Whitletts going for all these years with time and money. Under their stewardship, Whitletts Victoria FC have risen to unprecedented heights having cemented their place in Stagecoach Super League 1st Division and are challenging for promotion to the Super League Premier Division. In recent months the Clubs’ long term future has been secured following the closure of Voluntary Park. The Committee and South Ayrshire Council have worked together to secure the Clubs future with the agreement for the Club to be based at Dam Park. A firm base on which to lay its’ foundations for the future success on and off the park.
With no debt, to achieve its goals, the Club have put together with the local council, the local community and The Honest Men’s Trust, solid foundations on which to build and develop future success.
